Parish church

St Cuthbert’s

Radworth

Eighteen sixty-eight, Gothic Revival, with a broach spire that is the tallest thing on the skyline until the ringway lifts. It was built for a congregation the size the parish expected rather than the one it got, which is why it feels large.

It rings the hour from seven in the morning until ten at night, counting the hour out properly — one to twelve — and then it is silent until seven again. If you are out on the estate at three in the morning, the quiet is the church's doing.

The doors are open. Most days there is nobody in it.
